providence, rhode island. rare that you see a car going by. almost every business, city hall, everything is closed here, just like in massachusetts, the governor in connecticut also having that 4:00 ban on any cars and i wouldn't be surprised if it happens here very soon as well. i want to take you on our journey getting here. we just arrived here. it took us over five hours to get here from new york city, a trip that really shouldn't take any more than three hours. along the way, very slow going, light traffic. lots of snow plows but also some very serious accidents. we saw a jackknifed tractor-trailer that ran right into the median. we saw a huge semi that just fell off the side of the highway. we took a picture of that for you guys. that was consistent all the way up here. if you head up to maine, i want to show you some pretty dramatic video in maine. a 19-car pileup in maine. bottom line, the governor saying not a time for sightseeing, not a time for playing around. this is very, very serious. in 1978, 27 inches of snow, 26 deaths. they think this storm could be as bad or worse and

that include areas from around just north of new york city where winter storm advisories are now in effect for areas that already had been hit hard and pounded with the snow. of course, you get the freezing overnight. it could start out as some additional snowfall again and then this will change to rain and flooding is going to be a big problem here. this obviously though is just one of several stories. the immediate threat is the severe weather that we're finding and, of course, with the reports of damage. brianna, we're going to continue to monitor the situation, check in with the local folks that live down in the hattiesburg area. again, three photographs coming to us already. checking in with the national weather service, but our threat, again, continues for our sunday early evening. this will be extended and could include the metro atlanta area for the overnight period and that's the frightening part, it's the overnight hours when you can't see the funnels dropping down. >> that's right, tom. and we'll be keeping an eye obviously on this. and the other thing is i should say we're wait

through the night to clear a stretch of new york's long island expressway and have city-bound lanes open this morning for rush hour. the l.i.e. is the main way into the city from long island. so we are all over this big digout. indra petersons is in long island, george howell is in hamden, connecticut. we begin in boston where the big concern is power outages, how to get all of those folks out. indra, good morning. >> good morning. yeah, today it is also about getting back to normal. we still have 120,000 people this morning without power. temperatures are cold. tons of snow is on the ground. huge heaps of snow. today we have a snow emergency and school is still closed as the city takes one more day to clean out the snow. what you mentioned earlier is a weather charge today. a warm front is pushing through. highs will be in the mid 40s. a lot of the snow is expected to melt. before we get there, we will talk about more snow, several inches is possible and even freezing rain. so everyone is trying to get to work this morning. not seeing too much out here. it looks like people are listenin

close, the president's strategy is to go directly to the american people. you can't go to the city of chicago, even though you want to talk about opportunities, social programs, mental health services, increase in the minimum wage and all of the rest, you can't go to a place like chicago and not talk about gun violence. so what he's trying to do, i think, is say, look, this is not a rural issue versus an urban issue. this is an american issue. it's just one more way that -- he understands what the political odds are in congress for a ban on assault weapons. he gets that. but this is just one way for him to make the case to the american people to pressure members of congress and lots of them, by the way, as you know are democrats who are in districts where it might not be so popular. >> or states. >> or states. pressure members of congress with him at least in part of his gun proposals. >> dan lothian is also taking a look at this. this has been a manl juror problem in the city of chicago. president obama's hometown. here's dan with more on that. >> reporter: jim, the president is a

not otherwise see. that's why i love my job. yesterday, i learned what a great city mobile, alabama, is. it's alabama's major port. it's very pretty when you fly into it by air. it looks like a mini empire state building when you fly in. it's a major ship building hub, and now it's an airplane manufacturing hub. airbus is builts in mobile, and they're going to produce 40 to 50 airplanes a year. that's a big deal. airbus referred to the tradition of beauty and charm in the release, describing why it picks the city for such a major investment, and airbus is right. you have seen some of the pictures. it is a really pretty town. america's first mardi gras, by the way, ever held in mobile. and the drive from the airport, about ten miles from the airport to the port, even past the strip malls that every town in america has, was truly pretty. spanish moss draped across the bows, and beautiful southern style buildings, mansions, and even stores. america is so full of great cities, and we are lucky to get to see them. here is to beautiful mobile, on a wonderful weekend. thanks so much for watching.

morning as well, around 41 miles per hour in boston and 36 miles per hour in new york city so that's going to make those temperatures feel even colder than it feels right now. there's the snow coming down east maine and into the boston area and providence. heading to this hour, heavy snow at times. likely will see half a foot in boston accumulating. a lot will be blowing around, and then off the coast of the carolinas you can see the moisture working its way off the coastline itself, but behind that we're dealing with winter weather conditions, winter weather advisory in place here through 10:00. watch for black ice. once again, it's really hard to see as you come over the roadways there, and it makes it very slick and do be expecting to see some of that on bridges and overpasses, specifically. here's the current windchill in florida. can you believe this? this is the sunshine state and we're talking and feeling like 26 degrees in gainesville and 24 in jacksonville is what it feels like right now and even in south florida, we're talking temperatures here in the mid-30s in sarasota and ft.

kaye. i want to start with you in vatican city for a beginning and end of sorts here. pope benedict xvi is residing from st. peter's square right now. this is one of the last appearances he will make as pope. on the other end of the spectrum it is audition day for some of his successors. joining me now from rome cnn international correspondent ben wedemen. ben, i want to start with pope benedict. how will he spend his last 11 days now as pope? >> well, right now what we see is a much larger crowd that he's addressing in st. peter's square. numbers as high as 150,000 people on a normal sunday it wouldn't be even half that number. now, he's going to give this angelus prayers and address the faithful in a number of languages. right now in italian but also be speaking with them in english, polish, german. also today, however, he's going to go into a week of retreat for the period of lent and during that time he will be meeting in prayer and contemplation with many senior bishops and cardinals and, obviously, when that week comes to an end he will resume his normal activities, which include

. and looking at these cars here in this neighborhood, and throughout the city, you can see how easy that could happen. unfortunately, the young boy became overcome by carbon monoxide. they brought him outside of the car. the young boy was unresponsive. neighbors and paramedics tried to revive the boy. he went into cardiac arrest. and unfortunately a short time later, once he got to hospital, he was pronounced dead. incredibly tragic story and also a reminder, even though the storm has passed, there are still potentially dangerous situations that still remain behind the storm. and, in fact, i reached out to the mayor's office just about an hour and a half ago. the mayor's office releasing a statement saying, in part, the news of this tragic accident is a sad reminder that the danger of the storm is not over. our hearts go out to the family and their friends who are learning of this tremendously sad accident. and the mayor's office also putting out reminders, reminding people as they're coming out like you see in this neighborhood here, to clear out their cars. a lot of people willing to come ou
